Mental Game reminds us of our potential.

Mental Game reminds us of our potential.

Have you ever thought to yourself, "No, I'm done — I can't do this anymore," and then overcome that thought to accomplish your goal? Then you have played mind games with your inner self to achieve a desired outcome.

As defined by the dictionary, mind games means: An act of calculated psychological manipulation, done especially to intimidate. In the "mental game" we manipulate our emotions of courage and strength to intimidate our thoughts of weakness. This is the mental, physical and even spiritual training athletes and anyone facing challenging life experiences must play in order to overcome their weaker self and reach their full potential as a person or athlete.
Mental toughness is the most critical element to winning or achieving anything in life. This requires discipline when doubts begin creeping in and you must to reframe your mind to create positive mental energy.

Deveren Farley, Art Around the Corner artist, has always admired this energy in athletes that train for triathlons and Ironman competitions. As he thought about these challenges athletes overcome to achieve their goal, he wanted to visually represent their journey to the finish. So, Farley created a massive metal sculpture for this year's exhibit called "Mental Game."

"This piece represents Ironmans and triathlons," Farley said. "The craziness of all the metal represent the paths leading up to and during that race you've trained so hard for. To do an Ironman or triathlon is just as much a "Mental Game" as it is a physical game."
St. George residents are already connecting to this sculpture. Right now there are some tennis shoes hanging from the metal "paths" on the sculpture. Stefanie Bevans, Art Around the Corner Chair, explained.

"I'd like to think it represents someone who has accomplished something important to them, who's gone through the pain and made it," she said. That is the main mission of Art Around the Corner — to connect people in our community through art. Art tells our story as humans. Art gives us a reason to come together and engage in an experience together. Art keeps us connected to each other.

It doesn't matter what challenges we face as humans — our spirit always wants to overcome obstacles and master our inner voice to achieve our fullest potential. We invite you to come be inspired by this sculpture and join us in celebrating the strength of the human spirit.
