Winter Golfing Practice Tip - Hone a Better Mental Game With This Off Season Tip For Duffers

The winter is approaching and that means less time on the golf course and range. It might even mean no golf at all in your part of the world. That means a long layoff without even touching a club until warm weather returns. As a result our golf game becomes rusty or worse. We have to spend a lot of time and effort knocking that rust off and honing our game to up to our expectations.

Wouldn't it be great if we could actually take advantage of the off season to improve our golf game? How much better could you become if your skills improved during the winter instead of eroding? This is the second in a series of articles on off season practice tips. Here is a wintertime mental tip that will help you maintain or improve your golf game.

The Mental Game

Don't ignore the mental game. It is more important to our success on the course than most of us realize. The mental game is one of the most if not the single most challenging aspect of the game of golf for most of us. Too often we get in own way. We over think, under think and forget to think. We remember what we shouldn't and forget what we should. We make the game harder than it needs to be.

Use the winter to learn and practice mental techniques and exercises designed to improve your mental performance on the golf course. We can get mentally off track after a poor swing; a fellow player can get in our heads or even when we're playing better than usual. Pressure to perform well, fear of failure and fear of success all cause mental mistakes that show up in every aspect of the game. Your full swing, short game and putting will all suffer if you can't handle the pressure to perform.

Books, videos and audio products are available from various mental game coaches to provide you with what you need to be a better, more effective player. Search for recommendations and reviews to help you in the decision making process. But do take action and find the right mental training techniques this off season to help you overcome the effects of pressure.

One method I use to work on my course management skills during the winter is a video game. I play Tiger Woods Golf on my Wii system. The video game forces me to plan my way around the course, pick out target landing areas, study the greens prior to the approach shot and of course for putting as well. All of that strategic planning translates to improved course management in the real world for me. Probably would for you too.

Once you return to competitive golf next spring you'll have the mental game to reach that next level. The winter and its long layoff can cause all kinds of trouble for our golf game when spring arrives. Use this tip to keep your mental gamed honed to razor blade sharpness through the winter. You love what it does for your game come spring.

Do You Need A Mental Game Coach?

Tiger Woods has one. So does Andre Agassi. Almost every college pro team, major league pro sports team and Olympic team has one. Virtually every pro golfer and pro tennis player has one.

What do they have?

A Mental Game Coach.

These top sports stars are smart. They're good already. Even great. Some are all-stars and superstars. Why do "they" have a mind coach? They want to maintain their excellence. And, they want to get better. They want every edge they can get, because they know their opponents have this mental advantage.

I coach top corporate America executives, and you can turn on the TV and see the top college sports stars and major-league pro sports stars I coach. This article will help you learn what a Mental Game Coach does for these peak performers, and about how you can choose the right mind game coach.

Did you know there are at least 25 types of mind practitioners? The term mind practitioner itself is a very broad one. Maybe you're looking for a mental health professional. Perhaps someone to help you in business. Maybe you want to reduce stress, stop a bad habit and overcome a fear or phobia. Maybe you need to perform better on the presentation platform or in the competitive sports arena and avoid the dreaded choke. Maybe you want to learn how to get in the zone more often, on command. Whatever your reason for seeking a coach, they all, to one degree or another, help you train your brain. Find your mind. Get your motivation in motion.

The mental game encompasses every mind issue you can imagine in business, sports and life.

A mental game coach can help you in these arenas:

1. Awareness

2. Learning

3. Development

4. Change

5. Habit Formation

6. Performance

FIVE SPECIFIC MIND TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES COACHES USE

The public is usually aware of these five major mind coaching tools. These techniques are not tied to any one particular school of coaching or therapy. Practitioners from virtually every discipline utilize these.

1. Positive Thinking

2. Mental Practice

3. Visualization

4. Self-Hypnosis

5. Cognitive Restructuring

MAKE YOUR MIND COACH SELECTION CAREFULLY AND WISELY

When selecting your mind coach, take your time. One size does not fit all. Each coach has different limitations and plusses, and not all coach background and training is equal. Not all coaches trained the same have the same abilities and capabilities. As an MD friend is fond of telling people who ask, "Even the last person to graduate in the medical school class is called "Doctor".

Some coach training is narrow and deep and some coach training is broad and general. The field is a wide one, so make sure you select someone who has had successful experience in helping people with your specific issues, desires and goals. Choose a practitioner on background, reputation and results, not merely degrees. Chemistry and trust are the two final vital issues on which to measure your potential coach.

Good luck in your coach-hunting!

Golf's Mental Game May Be the Hardest Part to Master

As a golfer you must certainly be aware that learning the mental game of golf is just as important - if not more important - as learning even something as fundamental as swing basics. Perhaps to a greater extent than with any other sport, conquering golf's mental game is essential to becoming a great golfer. Without conquering this aspect of the game, you can pretty much surrender yourself to mediocrity at best.

Think about the last time you played golf - did you visualize your shot before taking your swing? If not, you are depriving yourself of a very important step. Without visualization, you have no capacity to send your ball in the right direction upon impact.

If you failed to visualize your shot, the chances are pretty high that you did not have a great shot. If this was the case, were you able to rebound after sending your ball in the wrong direction? Or was your mental game of golf such that you fell quickly into a rut? On the other hand, when you have a great shot are you able to duplicate it on your subsequent shots? Improving your mental game will help you to repeat the good shots and isolate the bad ones.

To develop golf's mental game you must be able to handle every distraction that comes your way - be that a bad shot or a hazard on the course. But just like mastering your swing does not come easily, neither does the mental game of golf.

In addition to visualizing your swing and having the capacity to not let a bad shot get to you, there are many other components to the mental game of golf. Learning to cope with pressure is a big part it, as we all know that stress levels rise when the game gets competitive. Learning to utilize pressure to your advantage will significantly improve your game. It is, in fact, quite possible to use pressure to take you to the next level.

Also, it is critical to the game of golf that you remain in the moment. This technique is practiced by Buddhist monks from all over the world; and it can be applied quite relevantly to the game of golf. If you are not focused, centered and attentive to your game, it is nearly impossible to play at your best. Learning to stay in the moment is perhaps one of the best methods to improving your game.

If you learn to play the mental game of golf, the rest will fall into place. While it may seem counter intuitive to work on the psychological component of a sport before even the fundamentals, this approach is tried and tested.

Any professional golfer will tell you that the inner game of golf takes precedence over any other aspect of the game. By working on the psychological component of the game first, you effectively simplify the rest of the learning process.

To determine the activity of the cognitive benefits of music for more research on children, the first study to examine whether the benefits can extend across a lifetime.

"Musical activity throughout the life of your brain is more capable of accommodating the challenges of an aging mother and the designer and manufacturer, service can be a challenging cognitive exercises," the lead researcher and a clinical neurologist at the University of Emory, said Brenda Hanna-Pladdy. High levels of musicians have studied music for a long habit of years, reveals a trend towards a lower level of non-musicians and musicians, and performed better on cognitive tests.

High levels of musicians are naming, visuospatial cognitive tests for memory and cognitive flexibility, or the brain's ability to adapt to new information on the most statistically significant higher scores than non-musicians.

"Based on previous research and our study, we believe that music participation is crucial in both years and at the age of acquisition," says Hanna-Pladdy. "Easy to learn a musical instrument before a certain age, and thus a larger effect on brain development can be a learning, enhance critical periods of brain plasticity."

Initial studies of cognitive performance in most musicians can not be conclusively connected to the music of his years, was the reference. Additional studies on the subject, who was Hanna-Pladdy, says more research is needed to explore the possible link.
